My Word of the Year....Change...

LB2014lesson1a 1510379_10201215402691892_992314556_nMy Lifebook 2014's first lesson centers on our chosen "Word of the Year". We have 2 assignments, the first one is a warm-up to get us comfortable making mixed media backgrounds. It also asks us to think about what we want our heart to say to our heart, what our heart needs to hear.  The second lesson asks us to create a painting of our "inner guardian angel" and to use our chosen  "word of the year".

Here is a picture of my first project. I'm rather happy with it although it is a bit darker than I meant it to be!

I chose the word "change" for my WotY for 2 reasons. The obvious first reason is because of all the change that is going on in my life. So much of it is beyond my control and I am going to have to learn to embrace it (change my thinking) if I want to have any chance of ever being happy again.

My second  reason for using the word "change" is because I am going to have to change a lot in myself if I want to acheive all that I hope to in the next year or so.  And that is something that I do have control over.  In fact, I am the only one who has control over it and if I fail in my endeavors, then there is no one else to blame but myself.

In this first lesson Tam also gave us a meditation to use (if we wanted to) before starting our assignment. She took us through our imaginary haven and then into our private sanctuary, however we visualize it.

Then we got to meet our "inner guardian angel".  My angel looked suspiciously like Glinda the Good Witch from the old Wizard of Oz with Judy Garland. Lol. What can I say.  I'll show you my finished project in a future post after I get a picture of it!

Banners Abloom - My Etsy Store

Last year I got the brilliant idea to make fabric banners or buntings as they are called in the UK, to sell at our local farmers and craft market in the summer. I also opened an Etsy store so that I could have them for sale all year long. You can take a look at my shop at Banners Abloom. My daughter has had 2 stores on Etsy for a couple of years and she graciously helped me with setting up mine. She sells paper crafted items such as greeting cards, garlands and cupcake toppers and she has shipped her creations all around the world! That's the nice thing about Etsy, the whole world is your customer! Kraft and Natural is her one store and Justyn Leigh Designs is her other shop, just in case you want to take a quick peek!

I am in the process of trying to photograph and list all of the banners that I have created so far. It is harder and certainly more time consuming than I thought it would be, but I'm sure that is just because it's a new process for me. The more times I do it the easier it will get, right?

Then I have to start creating more items! That is my favorite part...creating!! I have lots of plans and ideas for new "products" and will share them as soon as they are made!

If you have any ideas or suggestions feel free to let me know about them in the comments section!

Back To School! On-line that is!!

In my quest for a new direction in my life I have enrolled in quite a few on-line classes over the past year or so. I have gotten so much out of all of them, each of them giving me exactly what I needed at that time in my life!

Aren't we lucky to live in an age when we can sit in front of our computer and learn from someone who lives halfway around the world from us! One of the many things that I love about on-line classes is that once they have started I can access the lessons at any time and I can progress at my own speed.  If something important comes up in my life I can put the class on hold until I am able to come back and give it the attention that it deserves.

I also love that I can connect with other students who are from all over the world! Maybe some day I can actually meet a few of them! Wouldn't that be fun!

Actually, when I sat down and added up all of the classes that I have taken along with the ones that I am currently taking it does add up to more that I thought! 9+! But as I said I have gotten so much out of all of them!

I do recommend any and all of them and plan to give a little overview of each of them in my next few posts!

Lb-2014-promoimage-longCurrently I am taking Life Book 2014 with Tamera Laporte.  She lives in the UK and has the most wonderful accent! I could listen to her for hours!! The course has 52 weeks of lessons, all for a reasonable price of about $109, depending on the exchange rate. Yes, that is a one time fee for a year long course! It is truly a bargain!

Tam herself does at least 1 major lesson per month and then she has guest teachers who fill in the rest of the weeks! Holy cow... this year she has Flora Bowley as a guest teacher in May and then again in September!  Claudine Hellmuth is also doing an artist interview in February.

Her classes are presented as videos with supporting PDFs available!  Oh and I forgot to mention...she encourages us to download each of the lessons so we can refer to them foreeeevvver!! Lots of classes don't even allow that, much less encourage it!! That is how sweet, wonderful and generous Tam is!!

Tam is a mixed media artist and her artwork is just beautiful. It is playful and whimsical and fun!

In her videos she shares artistic techniques and she also tries to lead us into some self exploration and expression.  If you are not comfortable with that part of the lesson as she says many times over in each presentation, "you don't have do anything you don't want to do.  It is perfectly fine to just do the art."

Tam has also created a lively forum for her students (1600+ and counting) to be able to get to know one another and to post their work and progress should they chose to.  It is so cool to see women from all over the world and to be able to connect with them in a safe and fun environment!

Tam also has other online classes available at her website Willowing Arts. I have signed up for 2 other shorter ones and simply have not had the time to get started with them. Her shorter classes have lifetime availability which is a very nice plus!

I plan on posting my projects from our weekly lessons as I complete them, that is if they come out looking somewhat like what I had envisioned!

We shall see!
Thanks for stopping by!

A New Direction For My Life!

It appears that I haven't posted so much as a word here in over 2 years! Embarrasing and awkward!

My only excuse is that I have had many changes in my life over this time and have been slowly sorting my way through the ups and downs. I feel ready now to take on a new direction in my life and finally have somewhat of an idea of what I want it to be.

I think what has literally paralyzed me these past years has been an overabundance of choices. I have way too many interests and "hobbies"! All of my life I have been plagued with BSOD, Bright Shiny Object Disorder. I fall in love with a project and buy all of the supplies for it, but before it is even done, I am enchanted with something new! I love to garden, knit, sew, quilt, read, play with my dogs, take pictures, scrapbook,  do yoga, write, create art of all sorts, do all types of crafts...and the list goes on.  Notice that cleaning and cooking were not in my list of things I love to do, but I have faced the fact that I do have to devote some of my precious time to those things in the interest of survival and comfort!

So I have decided to go in the direction of exploring my artistic interests in the field of mixed media. I also opened an Etsy shop that features my fabric creations. Right now I am working on building up a line of decorative banners that celebrate special events or just add a bit of fun to a room or area. I have no idea where either of these endeavors will take me, but it should be an interesting journey!

Also, I am struggling with finding myself in the position of being a reluctant "empty-nester". I am working on sorting out my emotions and coming to accept my new position of "maternal unemployment". Well, not total unemployment but certainly underemployment. My kids have been the center of my life for 30 years and now they are all out on their own with their own lives to live. Which is as it should be, but it doesn't make it any less painful or lonely for me. I'll probably touch on this in some of my future posts - at least I'm thinking about future posts now, which is a step in the right direction!

I did give up my Stampin' Up! demonstratorship this past October.  I had been with the company since 1999 and loved every minute of it! I met all of ladies who have become my closest friends through my stamping and scrapbooking classes and business. But I was ready to move on and follow my own star.

So here I am...starting anew, with no idea where my life will take me. Fearful, scared, at times terrified, but if I don't give it a try now I'll live with regret for the rest of my life! And I don't want to look back and think..."what if...?"

And so.....we're off......on this new adventure....

See you again soon!

    A Passion for Pennants!

I love pennants and they are so popular right now!! I love that they can be personalized for just about any occasion and that in many instances they can be used many times over for different holidays or events!

In the new 2011-2012 Stampin' Up! Idea Book and Catalog we have lots of fun and fresh pennant related "toys" to play with! There is the cute and versatile Pennant Parade stamp set that coordinates perfectly with the Petite Pennants Builder punch. Also new is a Sizzix die that cuts out 3 different sized pennants! AND SU! has also tucked in 2 flower punches on the die, just for fun! The new chipboard set that is offered in the catalog has many pennant shapes that also coordinate with the die and punch!

This photo gives you an idea of what the new die has to offer.  The pieces all layer beautifully and the circles look adorable together!

032 I thought that someone might be interested to see how the dies and the Petite Pennant Builder punch compare and "stack up" to each other! I think that they could work very well together on some projects. The darker green and the bright yellow pennants are the ones that were punched out using the Pennant punch.

The last photo shows the new pennant die and new punches on top of the retired pennant die from last year's catalog. As you can see the old one is quite a bit larger than the new one. These old-style pennants are quite wide so when you are using this large sized pennant die, the material that you are cutting has to be folded in half and placed exactly on the die in the correct spot. It could be a bit "fiddle-y" at times, but I thought that it was well worth the time spent. I love the scalloped edge option (there are perforations all along the 2 edges if you prefer your pennants to be "scallop-less"). Both of the pennants on the die are quite large, which is a plus if you are making a garland that you actually want to hang up for decoration, but it could be bit of a detriment for card making! Well, I know that I will not be getting rid of my old, tried and true pennant die! And I am looking forward to using the new one for many fun and exciting projects to come!

I can just imagine so many possibilities!!! Woo hoo! I can't wait! Enjoy! Happy crafting! Amelia Rose

Christmas with the new Pennant Parade stamp set!

Ho ho ho!! How about a wee bit of Christmas cheer using the new Pennant Parade stamp set! I had said in my last post that I would show you how versatile this adorable set is and I had a lot of fun creating this card! Isn't the little tree stand just perfect? It's a stamp that's included in the set! Those design elves at Stampin' Up! are just waaay too clever, eh? I also used our new Petite Pennants Builder punch to make creating this card oh so easy!! The image in the middle is the full stamp punched out and the other two are the stamped triangles punched out and then mounted on unstamped punched out scalloped pennants. I do hope that makes sense! I stamped the tree stands in Chocolate Chip and then punched them out using our 1" circle punch ~ it was soooo much easier than cutting them out and I think that they need that white surrounding them to make them stand out.

When I was trying to get some inspiration for colors to use on my card I turned to our new catalog and checked out the colors that are used in our new DSP "Letters to Santa". I usually only use 3 colors at the most on any project that I create, but the paper also had Blushing Bride (pink), so I had to make a choice for my colors. I know I never would have put Marina Mist, Riding Hood Red and Old Olive together on a Christmas card, but I do think that these 3 work quite well together, if I do say so myself!!

I added a bit of bling with the rhinstones as tree toppers and the white Scallop Trim Border just peeking out from under the edges of the panels adds to the winter/Christmas feel.

After I put the card together and looked at it I wished that I had added some piercing down the sides of the panels to accentuate the edging! Oh well, I'll have to remember to try that another time!

    Project supplies:

Cardstock: Old Olive, Marina Mist, Riding Hood Red, Early Espresso, Whisper White.

Ink: Old Olive, Chocolate Chip, Riding Hood Red.

Accessories: Pennant Parade stamp set, Petite Pennants Builder punch, 1" circle punch, Word Window punch, Scallop Trim Border punch, Basic Rhinestones, 5/8" White Organza ribbon.

    Enjoy! Happy stamping!

    Pennant Parade fun!

My first project from the new 2011-2012 Stampin' Up! Idea Book & Catalog!

This is made with a new set called Pennant Parade and isn't it just the cutest thing? I can think of sooooo many ways to use it......on cards, on picture frames, on SCRAPBOOK PAGES!!  How stinkin' cute would it be to use this on a new baby page with the baby's name on the pennant...or on a wedding page above a picture of the new couple just kissing with a pennant saying simply "bliss"......or putting the year in the pennant on any type of page!! The possibilities are truely endless!! I can NOT wait to continue playing with this set!!

Oh and when the uber talented SU! designers created this set they even made a stamp of a little tree stand so that we could flip the pennant over and use it as a .....wait for it......Christmas Tree!! And there is a tiny star stamp to perfectly top off your tree!! They do think of everything don't they!!?

Oh and do you see what my card is sitting on?? Yep, a pennant punch!!!  It's perfectly sized for the Pennant Parade stamp set!!  Once again, those geniuses at SU! have thought of everything!

I used the gorgeous new In-Color Wisteria Wonder card stock along with our new Chocolate Chip baker's twine to add a finishing touch!  I also zipped the Wisteria card stock through my Bigshot using the Square Lattice Textured Embossing Folder to give the card some extra textural interest! So very easy!!
